"Night-Commuters" of Northern Uganda

We the undersigned are voicing our concerns for the "night commuters" of Northern Uganda.  The situation has been well documented by several organizations.  The Republic of Uganda has primary responsibility for protecting these children.

In the interest of these children we petition the Ugandan government to act on their behalf.

WE ask the Ugandan government to:

* Support the work of night commuter shelters,

* Develop community orientated support services and support measures in northern Uganda to prevent the abduction of children,

* Rescue those children still abducted and rehabilitate those who have been abducted,

* Uphold Uganda's obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child that was ratified in 1990, as well as the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict that was ratified in 2002,

* Implement, without delay, the recommendations made by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, and

* Facilitate and support the work of NGOs providing humanitarian assistance in the conflict-affected areas of Northern Uganda.
