AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL - Guantᮡmo Bay
"They did not ask me my age until I had been in Cuba for a year."
Mohamed has developed depression and has attempted suicide twice in 2006
Mohamed el Gharani is a Chadian national who was raised in Saudi Arabia. He faced discrimination as a non-Saudi of African origin. In his mid teens, he moved aboard for better economic and educational advancement prospects in Pakistan. He needed to be over 18 for a passport allowing him to travel unaccompanied. So he falsified his age.
Mohamed was 15 years old when in October 2001 in Karachi, Pakistan, he was detained when police raided the mosque where he was praying. Mohamed was held in prison in Pakistan until the end of November 2001. He then was transferred into US custody, hooded, shackled, beaten and threatened with death. He was taken by helicopter to Kandahar, Afghanistan, stripped naked and repeatedly beaten.
Mohamed was taken to Guantᮡmo Bay, Cuba in January 2002. He was one of the first ?enemy combatants? transferred to Guantᮡmo Bay. Upon arrival, he was allegedly severely beaten again and threatened with torture that "would be worse than anything he had been through in Pakistan."
His body is apparently covered in scars caused by the torture and beatings, his teeth are said to be falling out because of neglect and his tongue is apparently cracked as a result of dehydration.
Mohamed eventually had a Combatant Status Review Tribunal. He was charged with entering Pakistan with a false passport, which is true. He has not been charged with any terrorist related activity.
