We the undersigned politely ask the European Union to pressure the Eritrean government to improve the human rights situation in Eritrea as a condition for further economic aid.
We wish to express our special concern for Hamid Mohamed Said. Mr. Said was detained by Eritrean authorities in February 2002. At that time, Mr. Said was a broadcast sportscaster and producer for Eritrea�s Arabic language television network.
Since his arrest, Mr. Said has been held in undisclosed locations throughout Eritrea and has not been allowed access to family, legal assistance, or medical care. Please urge Eritrean authorities to immediately release Mr. Said. His case exemplifies the plights of thousands of Eritreans imprisoned for their nonviolent political, social, or religious beliefs.
