People's Republic of China
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about Liu Xiaobo who was sentenced to eleven years imprisonment for "inciting subversion of state power" on December 25, 2009. We consider the conviction of Liu Xiaobo to be an attempt to prevent him from carrying out his peaceful and legitimate human rights activities, such as the signing of Charter 08, a proposal for political and legal reform in China. We call on you to secure Liu's immediate and unconditional release.
We urge you to stop the use of broad and vaguely defined charges such as stealing, possessing and leaking state secrets and subversion to arbitrarily detain and prosecute activists, journalists and internet users. The detention, placement under house arrest, and harassment of peaceful human rights activists, which has grown in recent years, runs counter to promises made by officials in China's National Human Rights Action Plan 2009-2010.
