We petition for freedom for U Win Tin,

journalist, writer, promoter of human rights and

Amnesty International prisoner of conscience.

We, the undersigned, are sending this petition to express our longstanding and deep concern that

U Win Tin is still in detention after sixteen years, solely for the peaceful exercise of his rights to freedom of expression, assembly and association, and for promoting human rights.

As a member and secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the National League for Democracy,

U Win Tin worked closely with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. After his arrest, he was publicly accused of guiding and influencing Aung San Suu Kyi and of being a ?leftist? politician who urged the NLD to adopt a civil disobedience campaign against martial law. He was also accused of quoting Henry David Thoreau and citing the example of Mahatma Gandhi. U Win Tin?s incarceration is in violation of at least three international conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We are hereby petitioning authorities to release this sick 78-year-old man immediately and unconditionally. Pending his release, we request that he receive proper medical care now and that he be held in conditions that conform to international standards.

Further, we ask that the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) release all prisoners of conscience immediately, beginning with the elderly and infirm and that torture and ill treatment of prisoners cease now. And finally, we urge the SPDC to promote respect for all human rights in Myanmar, including the rights to assembly, association and freedom of expression.
